Safari in Tanzania

Receiving approximately 1 - 2 million visitors each year, Tanzania is one of Africa’s most popular safari destinations. Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park is a particular favourite, as it is one of only two places you can witness the Great Migration. The Serengeti has also been voted "The best safari destination in Africa" more times than any other safari park. 

Tanzania’s best safari parks can be split into two regions, the Northern Circuit and the Southern Circuit, and both offer incredible game viewing opportunities. 

1. The Northern Circuit is the most popular and the best place for your first safari.
   • Widely regarded as the best region to spot the BIG 5, huge herds of antelope, elephants and giraffe, and the only area you can spot the great migration, you can't go wrong with a Northern Circuit safari.
   • It’s worth remembering that, as a popular safari destination, large crowds can be expected, especially during the high season from July - September.
2. The Southern Circuit is a great place to experience a unique safari without the crowds.
   • The parks in this regional are less famous, but still offer a unique experience, and the animals tend to be a little more wild as they are less used to tourists.
   • There are fewer lodges in the South, so it is important to talk to an expert to ensure you have an unforgettable experience. 

What is the best time to safari in Tanzania?

The best time to visit Tanzania is between Jan - Mar and Jul - Sep when weather is clear and warm, and wildlife is abundant. Each month has its own pro's and con's though, and below is a breakdown to help you decide which time of year is best for you:

• January to March: Calving season
  • January to March is the best time to go on safari in Tanzania because it is calving season in the Serengeti.
  • At this time of year, the Great Migration herds slow down and mothers give birth to their calves. This is a great time of year to see young animals taking their first steps. Fresh babies also bring a lot of big cats!
• April to May: Big rains
  • The long rains are not an advisable time of year to go on safari, as roads can become flooded and riddled with potholes. Many tours also don’t operate during this time, and some camps and lodges close during this season.
• June: Early river crossings
  • June is a fantastic time to watch the early river crossings in the Western region of the Serengeti around the Grumeti River. 
  • Few tourists, great animal sightings and pre-peak season rates make for a fantastic safari. 
• July to August: Peak season
  • Late June to early August is the peak season for the Northern Circuit, especially in the Serengeti, as this is when the Great Migration occurs.
  • The north-western Serengeti is the best place to be for the beginning of the migration, between late June and July.
  • In August, the migration moves into the northern Serengeti. This is where you can catch a glimpse of herds making the perilous journey across the crocodile-infested Mara River into Kenya.
• September to October
  • The Great Migration moves into Kenya throughout September & October, so wildebeest sightings become less frequent. While you may catch the last of the Great Migration in early September, if you want to go on safari at this time of year, it is usually best to visit the Masai Mara in Kenya.
  • Unless you want to avoid the crowds of the Masai Mara and don't care about the great migration, then September - October is a wonderful time for safari. 
• November to December: Short rains
  • The short rains arrive through November to December, and the herds begin to return to the Serengeti following the Great Migration.
  • This is a good time of year to avoid crowds, but still see plenty of wildlife, as long as you aren't scared of getting a little wet. 

What do I need to know about travelling to Tanzania?

• Visa Requirements:

  • Most visitors will need a visa.
  • Australian tourists can get a visa on arrival or apply for an e-visa before travel.

• Currency:

  • The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency.
  • US dollars are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas, but carry some Tanzanian Shillings for smaller purchases from local providers.
  • Australian dollars are unlikely to be accepted, and will receive a poor exchange rate from banks. 

• Language:

  • The official language is Swahili.
  • English is commonly spoken in urban and tourist areas.

• Health and Safety:

  • ellow Fever vaccination is required if you are coming from a country with yellow fever (i.e. Kenya, Uganda, and many other countries in Africa).
    •  The yellow fever vaccination is a live vaccine and effective for life.
    • Your doctor may advise you not to have the vaccination if you are:
      • Over 60 years old
      • Have existing medical conditions.
    • Please consult a doctor for more information. 
  • Malaria is present and we recommend taking the necessary precautions, including mosquito repellents and anti-malaria medication.
  • Always drink bottled or filtered water.

• Electricity:

  • Tanzania uses 230V, 50Hz electricity with Type D and Type G plugs (three rectangular pins used in the UK).
  • Bring a travel adapter to ensure your devices stay powered.

• Time Zone:

  • Tanzania operates on East Africa Time (EAT), which is UTC+3.

About the Serengeti

The Serengeti is Tanzania's crown jewel, having won "Africa's Best Safari Park" more times than any other park in Africa (usually every year). The word "Serengeti" means wide open plains in the local Maasai language, and that is exactly what you get, almost 15,000 square km of pristine pastures for almost all of Africa's exotic safari animals; a mesmerising tapestry of wilderness and wildlife.

Vast grasslands stretch to the horizon. Lions laze beneath acacia trees, while elephants traverse the savannah. Hot air balloon safaris offer a celestial view of this living symphony. The Serengeti's ecosystem thrives with cheetahs, leopards, and an astonishing array of birdlife. Serenity pervades the landscape, interrupted only by the raw sounds of nature. About the Ngorongoro Crater

Once an active volcano higher than Mt Kilimanjaro, today the Ngorongoro Crater is the worlds largest un-broken, un-flooded amphitheater, and one of our favourite game parks in Africa. With walls up to 600m high, "The Crater" is home to most of Africa's most exotic animals. With a breathtaking spectacle of diverse ecosystems, from lush grasslands to shimmering soda lakes, The Crater's unique geography creates an intimate wildlife encounter like no other. 

Andrew Partos is an award-winning Landscape Architect, Urban Designer, and Architect with over 25 years of experience in the design and delivery of high-profile projects across Melbourne and beyond. He played a pivotal role in the creation of Melbourne’s iconic civic plaza, Federation Square, one of Australia’s most visited locations, and is the Vice President of the Victorian Division of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture (AILA).

Andrew has also had a long affiliation and love for Tanzania and has visited many times over the past 15 years. He is also a Board Member of Mwembe Foundation Australia and has been instrumental in many projects across Africa, some of which you will visit during your tour.

Take a tour of the school, meet the students, help-out with a project around the school and visit the home of a bright young student (if you sponsor this will be your sponsor student - more info about how to sponsor under Tasks). During this home visit, you will get the chance to meet the student's family and immerse in Tanzania culture as you sample local foods and learn a to speak a little Swahili. This is one of the most transformational and rewarding experiences that Adventure Out Loud offer and we guarantee you are going to love it.

During this section of your adventure, you will be camping in a remote part of Tanzania, close to Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro. This will be a very authentic experience that may put you out of your comfort zone. You may need to help cook, wash up and do other chores around the school or village. Basic toilets and bucket showers are available.

The Maasai are a nomadic tribe found across East Africa. The Maasai are most iconic for their colourful clothing and interesting traditions. Historically the Maasai are grazers with large herds of cattle, sheep & goats. Today is your chance to learn about and immerse into this unique culture. Take a tour around the Boma, see inside a local mud hut, and meet these interesting, nomadic people.

This Zanzibar adventure is the perfect way to unwind before heading back home. During this adventure, you'll be:

Planning an African Adventure

• Is Africa safe to travel?
  • Yes.
  • Africa is made up of 54 independent countries and most, including all the countries we travel to, are safe.
  • From our experience, Africans appreciate and protect tourists. They love immersing you in their culture and are proud to show you their country. 
• What is healthcare like in Africa?
  • Public healthcare is basic in most African countries.
  • Each year it improves, however medical centres and hospitals are often under-staffed and under-resourced.
  • There are a number of reputable private clinics and hospitals and in the event you need treatment, this is usually where our team will take you. 
• How do I buy USD cash for my trip?
  • It is recommended that you purchase larger currency notes (i.e. US$100 and US$50 bills) from an exchange vendor or bank in your home country.
  • Larger notes will receive better exchange rates in Africa when you convert to local currency. 
  • USD currency notes MUST be printed after 2006 and must not be ripped or damaged in any way.
  • Most countries will not accept Australian dollars. 
• Keeping Passport and cash safe?
  • We recommend that you keep your passports and cash out of sight in your locked room, preferably in a locked bag or cupboard.
  • You should also have a copy to carry around with you and save a copy online (i.e. in your email or on Google Drive, etc.). 
  • Cash should be hidden in multiple locations to avoid the risk of all of it being stollen at once. 
• How do I minimise the risk of becoming ill in Africa?

  • To minimise the risk of becoming ill during your trip, we recommend that you:

    • Drink bottled water
    • Wear footwear at all times
    • Have regular showers
    • Use hand sanitizer before and after you eat
    • Avoid eating uncooked food, particularly washed salads and food from unknown vendors
    • Use mosquito repellent, malaria treatment medication, sunscreen and appropriate clothing.

Safari must knows

• What car do we use for safari?
  • All of our safaris will be in luxury 4WD safari jeeps. 
  • These long-wheel base jeeps have large comfortably bucket seats for 6 - 7 people, a pop-top roof, charging points and side windows to allow for premium game viewing, safety and comfort.
  • Here are a few example pictures:

• You may also see open sided jeeps that are owned by the lodges.
  • We rarely use these jeeps because they do not provide protection from wind, dust and rain, particularly when you are visiting multiple parks.
  • The safaris operated by lodges usually run at set times from 6 - 9am and 3 - 6pm and do not venture far from your lodge. This is not ideal if the animals have moved.
  • Closed jeeps allow us to cover more of the park, usually providing better game viewing.
  • If you would prefer an open sided vehicle, please discuss with us at booking. 

• What does a typical day on safari look like?

  • The best time to spot Africa's animals is in the early morning and the evening. As such, a typical day on safari looks like this:

    • 05:30: Coffee and early breakfast 
    • 06:00 - 10:00: Morning game drive
    • Lunch and free time at your lodge 
    • 15:00 - 18:00: Afternoon game drive
    • Dinner, drinks and free time 
    • If you are feeling tired, you are welcome to opt out of any of these activities and spend more time relaxing at your lodge.

• Why does Adventure Out Loud primary focus on educating disadvantaged students in Africa?

  • 111 million African children are not in school!

  • We're not ok with this and we are doing something about it by donating 50% of our profits to keep disadvantaged students in school.

  • Education empowers young people to solve their own problems. It is a hand up, not a hand out, and we believe it is one of the most effective ways to fight poverty in Africa.

  • Educated Africans have higher paying jobs, fewer children and can afford to support their family's education & healthcare needs. They are also less likely to vote for corrupt politicians and more likely to stand up for their rights.

  • Education is a basic human right, and we can't wait for the day when every child has access to a quality education.

Africa has a tipping culture that is similar to America and it is appreciated when you tip guides, hotels, restaurants, and other key service providers. To make it easy, Andrew Partos will be tipping on behalf of the group for all group activities and the cost of tips has been included in your package.

Here are a few notes about tipping for days when you are doing your own thing:

• Tipping can be in USD or in the local currency. 
• Tips recommended below should be split between the group
• Tips should ideally be handed to each ranger/tracker/guide or deposited into the tip boxes at the headquarters/lodge. 
  • We do not recommend giving all of the tips to the head guide, as this usually leads to them keeping most of the tip and the rest of the staff missing out.
