About this tour

Location : Kruger National Park, South Africa

The Kruger National Park is one of Africa's best game parks and is home to vast savannas and most of Africa's exotic safari animals, including the BIG 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo & rhino). Kruger is the perfect destination for your first African safari and this tour is a cheaper option than most of our other safaris.

The 5-day tour starts and ends in Johannesburg and includes:

3 days exploring the Kruger National Park (including a night safari on day 4)
1 full day exploring the Panorama Route
Private return transfers from/to Johannesburg airport (or a hotel within 5km of the airport).

Most operators only do 3-hour morning and afternoon drives, but the Kruger is vast, which is why this safari includes full-day safaris. Full day safaris maximise your chances of covering a significant portion of the park, and of spotting the BIG 5 (approximately 80% of people on this tour spot the BIG 5).

Accommodation

The preferred safari lodges for these safaris are Umbhaba Eco lodge and Hazyview Sun. Both are privately owned 3-star lodges, with en suite accommodation and great meals and are located in Hazyview, approximately 15 minutes from either Phabeni or Numbi gates, Kruger’s Premier wildlife area.

Departure & Return Information

Location : O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), Jones Road, Kempton Park, Johannesburg, South Africa

This tour starts at OR Tambo International Airport at 07:00 on day 1 and ends at OR Tambo International Airport on day 5 (usually between 13:00 – 14:00). Refer to the map below for directions.

Alternatively, we can collect you from lodges within a 5 km radius of the OR Tambo International Airport and we recommend:

If you would prefer to fly to Kruger, you can fly directly into Skukuza Kruger National Park or Kruger Mpumalanga International Airports. Your safari guide will collect you from either airport at no additional cost. Flights are at your own cost.

DAY 1

Transfer and Full day Panorama Tour

Location : Blyde River Canyon, South Africa

Included: Johannesburg to Kruger Transfer | Park Fees & Permits | Experienced English Speaking Guide | Dinner | Accommodation (Twin Share)

Guests will be collected from hotels within 5 km of the OR Tambo International Airport or from the OR Tambo International Airport Shuttle and Bus Terminal at 07:00.

Departing Johannesburg, we head east towards Mpumalanga Province and the picturesque Panorama Route. Today we will visit the The Blyde River Canyon, the 3rd largest canyon in the world, stretching over 40km long and reaching depths of up to 1,200m.

Carved by time, The Blade River Canyon is a geological wonder containing many species of vibrant plant life with rivers and dams making up the floor of the canyon. The Three Rondavels, three towering dolomite rock formations, command attention as silent sentinels of time. Cascading waterfalls, like the iconic Mac-Mac Falls, add a symphony of sound to the visual spectacle. The canyon's panoramic vistas, especially at God's Window, transport visitors to ancient realms where the misty horizon meets the rugged terrain.

Comfortable walking shoes are a must as many of the lookout points take approximately 15 - 20 minutes. We will arrive at our lodge at around 17:00 – 18:00. Dinner is at our lodge.

- The guide will stop at one of the Highveld towns for lunch.
- You can purchase lunch with cash or card.

- Card machines do not always work in South Africa due to electricity load sharing.
- It is recommended you carry cash for emergencies.

DAY 2

Full Day safari in the Kruger National Park

Location : Kruger National Park, South Africa

Summary of the day:

8:00am - You will be picked for a full day game drive with your guide.
12:00 - 1:00pm - Lunch
15:00 - 18:00pm: Drive back to your lodge.

Mpumalanga means the place of the rising sun and is the first province in South Africa to see the sun rise. Sunrise is the best part of the day on safari, and all safaris start before sunrise because this is the best time of day to spot Africa's exotic animals, particularly big cats.

Kruger offers a variety of eco zones and each one has a different range of wildlife, we visit rivers and watering holes as well as plains and Bushveld regions. Your guide will know which are the best areas to visit based on recent game sightings and activity.

This will be a full day game drive, you will arrive back to your lodge in the evening and have enough time to relax, swim and have a great dinner.

Notes:

Breakfast
- The Lodge will arrange breakfast packs and your guide will stop after about 3 hours for a breakfast and bathroom break.
- You can also purchase coffee at the breakfast spot.
Lunch
- The guide will stop at one of the rest camps for lunch.
- You can purchase lunch with cash or card.
Tipping:
- We recommend you tip your safari drivers US$30 - $50/guide per day.
- You should also tip your lodge US$10 - $20pp/day.

DAY 3

Morning safaris and Afternoon at Leisure

Location : Kruger National Park, South Africa

Summary of the day:

6:00 - 10:00: Morning game drive
11:00 - 12:00: Lunch
Free time at the lodge for leisure

We always depart before sunrise and this is the best time for viewing wildlife as predators are mostly active in the early hours of the day. Your guide will focus on animals and regions not yet seen or covered. The Kruger National Park has 148 mammal species and over 500 bird species so there is always something to see, no safari is ever the same.

We return to the lodge after your morning game drive, today we have an afternoon at leisure, swim, enjoy some great walks around the lodges, try our local beers or just enjoy our great African weather. A light lunch and tasty dinner will be served at the lodge.

DAY 4

Morning safari and Sunset/Evening safari

Location : Kruger National Park, South Africa

Summary of the day:

6:00 - 10:00am: Morning game drive
11:00 - 12:00pm - Lunch and free time at the lodge
15:45 - 18:30: Sunset evening safari
20:00 - 21:00pm - Dinner at the lodge

Pre-sunrise departure for a safari focusing on finding animals you have not already seen. Predators are more active in the morning and Kruger never disappoints.

After a short breakfast and coffee stop, we will continue with the safari returning to the lodge for your lunch which will be served at the lodge and in the afternoon you will have time to relax.

In the afternoon we will head out on our 3 hour sunset/evening safari. Evening safaris offer a unique opportunity of spotting Africa's nocturnal animals; common duiker, lesser bushbaby, thick-tailed bushbaby, nightjars, and of course predators like serval, jackal, leopard, lion and hyena who often hunt at night. Evening safaris also offer unforgettable sunset opportunities so make sure you bring your cameras.

Dinner will be served at the lodge after you return from your incredible safari.

DAY 5

Transfer back to Johannesburg
