This package includes a safari in Nairobi & Amboseli National Parks over 3 days. If you want more safari, we recommend adding a 3 - 7 extra days in one or multiple of the below parks so you can witness the Great Migration.
About the Great Migration
The Great Migration is the annual migration of more than 1 million wildebeest and zebra through the Masai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania.
- During Jul - Oct each year, the herds are in the Northern Serengeti & Masai Mara. This is the best time to see them making their famous river crossings. It is also a fantastic time of year to spot big cats, many of whom have also migrated following their food source.
- From Nov - Jun, the herd migrates through the Serengeti following the rain.
- Jan - Mar is a particularly good time to safari, as the huge herd welcomes the arrival of thousands of baby wildebeest. The newborn calves are easy prey for big cats, which makes for easy spotting of these magnificent creatures. At this time of year, the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu are the best regions to visit.
Best parks to see the great migration
The Serengeti (Africa's best safari park)
The Serengeti is Tanzania's crown jewel, having won "Africa's Best Safari Park" more times than any other park in Africa (usually every year). The word "Serengeti" means wide open plains in the local Maasai language, and that is exactly what you get, almost 15,000 square km of pristine pastures for almost all of Africa's exotic safari animals; a mesmerising tapestry of wilderness and wildlife.
Vast grasslands stretch to the horizon. Lions laze beneath acacia trees, while elephants traverse the savannah. Hot air balloon safaris offer a celestial view of this living symphony. The Serengeti's ecosystem thrives with cheetahs, leopards, and an astonishing array of birdlife. Serenity pervades the landscape, interrupted only by the raw sounds of nature. A sanctuary of natural wonders, the Serengeti embodies the essence of untamed Africa, captivating the soul with its boundless beauty.
The Serengeti is home to approximately 4,000 lion, 1,000 leopard, 225 cheetah, 3,500 spotted hyenas and 300 wild dogs
Lake Ndutu
Nestled within the heart of Tanzania's famed Serengeti & Ngorongoro ecosystem, Ndutu is a pristine wilderness teeming with an abundance of wildlife. From Feb - Apr, thousands of wildebeest and zebras traverse the plains in search of fresh grazing grounds, accompanied by their vigilant predators. This is also the time of year when many wildebeest and zebra give birth, meaning there are lots of cute babies around, or if you are a lion, lots of food. The shimmering waters of Lake Ndutu with its dancing flamingos and giant hippos add an extra element to a safari in Ndutu, and the serenity of the African bush surrounding your luxury migration camp, allows you to fully immerse in nature.
The other huge advantages of going on safari in Ndutu are:
- Fewer lodges and campers = fewer tourists.
- You are allowed to drive off-road, which allows you to get closer to wildlife and spend more time with them.
Other parks you might like to visit include:
The Ngorongoro Crater
Once an active volcano higher than Mt Kilimanjaro, today the Ngorongoro Crater is the worlds largest un-broken, un-flooded amphitheater, and one of our favourite game parks in Africa. With walls up to 600m high, "The Crater" is home to most of Africa's most exotic animals. With a breathtaking spectacle of diverse ecosystems, from lush grasslands to shimmering soda lakes, The Crater's unique geography creates an intimate wildlife encounter like no other.
The Masai Mara (sometimes spelt Maasai)
The Masai Mara is home to huge populations of big cats, and has the highest concentration of big cats in Africa. Covering more than 1,500 square kilometres, the Masai Mara is home to approximately 900 lion, 300 cheetah and 100 leopard. It is also home to more than 80 different species of mammals and more than 450 varieties of birds. It is no wonder it is one of Africa's best safari parks, and a must-see for anyone going on safari!
Tarangire National Park
Huge herds of elephant, towering baobab trees and vast savannahs set the stage for an immersive wildlife experience when you visit Tarangire National Park. Witness the iconic elephant herds, gracefully roaming under the African sun, while giraffes elegantly graze among acacia trees. Lions laze in the shade, and the diverse birdlife flutters around you, welcoming you to experience the wild adventure that is safari in Tarangire.
