Founded in 1977, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) has become the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. On average, 1 elephant is killed every 26 minutes in Africa and this project plays a vital educational and fundraising role in saving the worlds largest land animal.
Entry fees, included in your adventure fee, help DSWT continue the invaluable work that they do, and as part of your visit you'll get to meet some of the rescued baby elephants that they are rehabilitating. The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife is fighting hard to conserve the Rothschild giraffe. When the project was founded in 1979, there were less than 300 of these magnificent animals remaining in the wild. Today, there are believed to be about 2,500 Rothschild giraffes living in the wild, and this centre has played a vital educational and fundraising role, with 90% of the money collected from entrance fees being used for conservational activities.
During your visit to the giraffe centre, you'll get the chance to feed a few of the habituated giraffes. This is particularly fun if Ed, the dominant male, is around, because he is the only giraffe who will take the food from your lips, giving you a big old kiss at the same time. Meet the life changing Mirror of Hope, visit the home of one of Adventure Out Loud's sponsor students, meet their family and learn how to cook a delicious Kenyan feast. This is the perfect opportunity to immerse in Kenyan culture, practice your Swahili and get to know some of the most resilient and remarkable people on the planet.
The Mirror of Hope (MOH) was founded in 2010 by Tommy & Judy Nyawir, to empower vulnerable women & children living in the Kibera Slums. MOH achieves their mission through the implementation of a range of innovative health, education and entrepreneurship initiatives. We first visited MOH in 2015 and we have been supporting them ever since.
